Marine Earth Observation Operational Support Specialist

We are looking for a dynamic, detail-orientated and user-focused data scientist or remote sensing specialist with experience in Earth observation to work on projects for our client, EUMETSAT. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their experience working with satellite Earth observation products for oceanography and marine applications, a proficiency in high level programming languages (preferably Python), and a clear desire to support end the marine community through user support and training activities.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Support our client’s application experts with user communications relevant to changes in the operational marine data stream;
- Interact with operational and engineering teams to validate services and translate operational updates into suitable information for the user base;
- Assist the EUMETSAT Copernicus Marine Training Service with development of training material to support the external user community;
- Contribute scientific expertise to the development of user and training resources, with particular focus on Copernicus products.
Required qualifications, skills and experience:
- University degree (or equivalent experience) in remote sensing or another relevant field (e.g. computer science or any physical/Earth science discipline);
- 3 or more years’ experience working with marine Earth observation products;
- A clear understanding of satellite Earth observation techniques for marine applications;
- Proficiency in at least one high level programming language (preferably Python), and a desire to work in others where necessary;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support the production of technical document preparation, web content, video recordings and live demonstrations;
- The ability to work across a large team and with external partners;
- Highly organised and detail orientated;
- User focused;
- Fluency in English.
Desirable but not mandatory:
- Background in training end users in the use of marine Earth observation products;
- History of working in high-latitude sea surface temperature and sea-ice related marine applications;
- Familiarity with current trends in big data access: API use, hosted/cloud-processing systems;
- Experience of generating and working with cloud-optimised data sets;
- Understanding of protocols/practices associated with code management: versioning, deployment, QA;
- Knowledge of the organisational structure and working practices of operational space agencies and the Copernicus programme.
This role is offered as a part-time position with the possibility to increase to full-time after 18/24 months.
