Data Scientist

Tweag I/O

Paris or Remote, France

Who are we?

Tweag I/O are a software research and development company based in the heart of Europe. We work with our clients, ranging from startups to multinational corporations, to apply functional programming techniques to problems in finance, marketing, retail, aerospace, bioinformatics, high performance computing and elsewhere. We believe in building modular, composable solutions in order to tackle complexity.

We're also committed to contributing back to the communities we work in. We actively contribute to build systems, the Haskell ecosystem, and to various data engineering and data science tools. Example projects are Nix Flakes, linear types for Haskell GHC, a Haskell-to-WASM compiler, Haskell support for Bazel, our data pipelining libraries funflow and porcupine or a Nix-Jupyter integration.

We're looking for exceptional engineers to join our team, either remote or on site at our office in the centre of Paris.

Who are you?

Tweag.io work with multiple clients in multiple fields, and the tools and knowledge needed vary depending on what we're working on. As such, we rarely look for specific technical skills. Instead, we look for people who are inquisitive, intelligent and capable of quickly adapting to new situations. You should be comfortable with feeling out of your depth and rapidly becoming an expert in a new field.

Obviously, we work a lot with Haskell and Nix, so skills in these areas are helpful. However, don't feel like a lack of these should exclude you. If you feel like you have expertise in areas that you could bring to bear on the sorts of problems we work on, we'd love to hear from you. Equally, a lot of our work involves working with clients to understand their problems and communicate effective solutions, so people skills are very important!

In general, our engineers all need to:

  • quickly assimilate new data to rapidly come to production speed on a new project;
  • be capable of working unsupervised;
  • bring passion and excitement for the work;
  • build good relationships, with clients and with colleagues.

A typical data candidate has some mix of the following skills:

  • high level of technical competence in a programming language (Haskell, Python, Scala, OCaml, C++, etc.);
  • statistical analysis and machine learning techniques (python ecosystem, R, Stan, etc.);
  • dev tools and techniques (Git, Github/lab, Nix and NixOS, Kubernetes, Docker, CI, system monitoring, automated deployment);
  • team management, project planning, etc.;
  • cloud technologies and databases (AWS, GCP);
  • business development;
  • presentation, communication, etc.

What will you be doing?

Engineers at Tweag typically work on three main things:

  • Embedded in a client team, working with their engineers either by yourself or with other Tweag people;
  • Working with other Tweag people on a project for a client;
  • Working on various community and research projects run by Tweag.

Obviously, the nature of the work varies from project to project. You can expect, however, to be working on challenging problems in conjunction with some of the smartest engineers in the business.

Benefits

  • The chance to work on interesting problems, and work with and learn from some amazing people;
  • A flexible work environment, based either remotely or in Paris;
  • The ability to use Haskell, Nix, and other exciting technologies in a professional setting;
  • The support to grow into other specialist areas, if desired.
